Unpopular opinion: I don't love Brahms. But the opening of du Pré's recording of the Sonata No. 1 in E minor with Daniel Barenboim kind of turns me into an über fan. I noticed that the compressed sound I hear in the YouTube version is nowhere near as satisfying as even my CD (just imagine it on vinyl, or *gasp* live!), but it still has that liminal quality that has kept this one on repeat for years.
